EP REVIEW: Chasing Ghosts - 'Fearless'

Tracklist

01 - Fallen From Grace
02 - Fearless
03 - Dark Skies

Chasing Ghosts was formed in 2014 by bassist and keyboard player Lee Brueton. After an extensive audition process by Gary Fuller on drums, Ashley Clark on rhythm guitar, Maycon Milani De Matos on lead guitar and Nelson Cancini as lead vocalist, Chasing Ghosts developed as you see them now. They are a 5 piece with a passion for dark, heavy rock, driving guitars and meaningful lyrics.

Within two months of recording their debut track "Everything Changes" they became the focus of the Pluggin' Baby, which led to major airplay on over 50 radio stations in the UK, US and Canada. Radio stations, such as, BBC Radio, Total Rock and Metal Nation created a buzz around the band, giving them some well deserved exposure.

In October 2015 they were signed to Band Management Universal and began writing the 'Fearless' EP. Once writing was complete they moved into the Lynchmob Studio in London and started the recording process. 'Fearless' was released in September 2016 and is available on iTunes and Spotify.

When I started listening to the EP the first thing that struck me was how much the singer Nelson sounded like David Draiman from Disturbed.  He has a very powerful, but controlled, voice that brings depth to the songs. Musically, they also remind me of Boy Hits Car.

Track 1, 'Fallen From Grace' is a moody, guitar-driven track about love and loss. Focusing more on the loss side, with the chorus, "Fallen from grace, such a shame such a waste". It's a pleasing mass of guitars and heavy drums. You can see influences in there from bands such as Alice in Chains, Live, and hints of Disturbed.

The song 'Fearless' starts with more lyrics of lost love, "You broke my heart and you broke my soul." Surprisingly, it has some very upbeat guitar work. The song progresses from sadness into bitterness and rage. I like this one--it speaks to me. This is the title track of the EP and the strongest of the three tracks on the EP, but this by no means diminishes the other two excellent tracks on this release.

Finishing on 'Dark Skies', a track with a slow build up into a softer side of Chasing Ghosts, this has a more hopeful feel to it as if it was breaking off the melancholy and anger of the first two tracks. On this tune I noticed the drums a lot more; whilst present on the other tracks, they have been brought to the front, with great effect.

All in all, a very good three track EP, one that I'd definitely give a big thumbs up to. I hope to see more of Chasing Ghosts in the future.

Their video for 'Fallen from Grace' (featuring 'Game of Thrones' actress and contortionist Pixie Le Knot) will be released soon, so, look out for that.
